Gum Regeneration

The goals of periodontal therapy is to stop the active destructive disease state and to repair as much damage as possible that has occurred to the underlying bone support. Periodontal Regeneration is used as a term to describe the process of placing materials to rebuild the lost tissues including bone, periodontal ligament and root cementum. Periodontal regeneration is the area that has recieved the most attention and focused research over the past several years and is an ongoing area of advancement in periodontics. For this reason, Dr. Kaufman is dedicated to staying abreast of the latest materials and techniques.

Recently, many new materials have become available for regenerative purposes. Some of the materials utilized today include a genetically engineered protein gel, that when applied to the roots can stimulate natural tissue repair. Also, genetically engineered growth factors are being combined with bone grafting materials that can consist of natural bone products or mineral sources. The newer materials enhance the results that previously could be attained. They also alleviate the need to harvest any bone from the patient. With the newer materials, the situations that can be treated successfully has expanded greatly.

A key factor in the ability of Dr. Kaufman to regenerate the lost tissues is the initial state of damage to the underlying bone support, including the three-dimensional architecture. Therefore, the earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the better the result that can be achieved. Also, with early detection and treatment, the areas treated can be limited to smaller segments which help make the healing phase faster and more comfortable.

Periodontal regeneration is typically the preferred method for treating the damage caused by destructive periodontitis. Periodontal regeneration is used in conjunction with other procedures that gain access to the root structure for thorough cleansing. It is during these other procedures that regeneration is performed by treating the root surfaces and placing the materials best suited for your individual situation.

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Kaufman can discuss with you if periodontal regeneration can help restore your smile. He has received his certification in patient management with Oral, and Nitrous oxide sedation techniques form DOCS. Doctors for Oral Conscious Sedation.
